when firefox loads it also loads another tab for the search engine. How do i remove this where it will only load my start up page?

You can check the home page setting and make sure that it doesn't have a trailing '|'.

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' symbols.

try changing the home page to about:home or about:blank through the options menu
