I'm in WordPress 3.5.2 on this client's site. I've upgraded another client's site to WordPress 3.6, and it's also broken there. I'm trying to add a link to a page in the visual editor. I should be able to highlight a word or group of words and create a link with them using the links buttons in the Visual Editor. Except very recently, in Firefox, those buttons are grayed out and only work sporadically. ***The buttons work in Chrome and Safari. I haven't tried it in IE yet.***

If I can't get this working again in FF, I'll have to use the other browsers, and I really, really don't want to. Can you please help me figure this out?

Let me give the general advice first, particularly for sites that do not work correctly after an update to the site that could affects its script files.

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r (Mac: Command+Shift+r) to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

(WIN) orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
(MSC) Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, use either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually. Not sure whether any affect the rich text editor.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

For what it's worth, the button works for me on WordPress 3.6, in Firefox 23, on Windows 7.

Well, I have that stuff all set to clear every time I quit FF anyway, and no, it didn't work. But I've been able to narrow it down to a plugin. Now to find out which one. Thank you!
