Windows 7-64, BTW.

I have many tabs open, in several windows, sometimes.

If I have to restart for some reason, when FF would close, it would remember the open tabs and windows the next time it opened.

But now, for some reason it doesn't remember them, and I have to try and remember them myself.

I suspect some file in my profile is corrupted, but I have no idea which one. This may not even be the answer. I don't know.

Help!

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Browsing History

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

"Clear history when Firefox closes" was not checked.

I guess I should be a little more clear about what is happening.

FF does remember 1 tab in one of the windows, and then also opens tab that goes to my home page. Then it opens another empty window with the home page.

It's really weird.

But I actually had 4 windows open, and one of the windows had like 25 tabs, the other windows had about 5 tabs open.

Make sure that you use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

You can check for problems with preferences and rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default value.

Closing the program cleanly with File/Exit is not always possible. It's usually another program that brings down the whole machine.

I'm gonna try the prefs, though I don't want to lose my current information in trying it out. But I'm gonna have to.

If you suffer from crashes that often then best is to set this startup setting.

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
