In previous versions, the address bar doubled as a search bar with Google. I don't like having to reset the small search bar after shopping on Amazon or Ebay.

Firefox has two search bars- the address bar that doubles as a search bar, and the small one that can be directed to specific sites like Amazon, Ebay, etc. If there are two search bars, it's silly to have one search bar direct the other. What ends up happening is that I forget to reset the small search bar back to Google (my favorite), and then my intended Google search in the address bar ends up going to Amazon or Ebay. It's really annoying, and it wasn't like this on the previous version of Firefox.

Can you undo this "improvement" to the latest version?

Thanks!!

Because the address bar was routinely hijacked by extensions, and because the search bar will disappear in a future redesign, they were linked together starting in Firefox 23.

You can use an add-on to separate the two again. For example:

Thanks!!! This has been a consistent annoyance since I upgraded, and now the problem is solved. Much appreciated.

I am not sure but IIRC there could be a possibility of the search bar being dropped entirely sometime in the future.

Hopefully addon developers will keep abreast of changes for those of us that appreciate an alternative search in addition to whatever is used on the addressbar. Or maybe the search tabs or other suitable ideas will gain traction.
