sessionstore.js has stopped updating (as of a few weeks ago)
a few weeks ago (1/06/14), sessionstore.js stopped automatically updating, so after a crash it will always restore to the tabs I had open on that date and not to the ones before the crash or shut down.
I have installed a few session managing extensions to try to work around it and only one has helped at all (it has its own session managing functions and ignores sessionstore.js)

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
Rename (or delete) the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
You can reset browser.sessionstore.* prefs that are user set (bold) to the default value via the right-click context menu on the about:config page to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.
settings in about:config are fine, I do not want to delete sessionstore.js because I don't want to loose all the tabs I have open (which is a lot of tabs).
Are there any numbered sessionstore-##.js files present in the Firefox profile folder?
Which extension are you using for Session Restore as you seem to have installed a lot of extensions that deal with storing session data and tabs?
Note that you should be cautious with installing extensions that support the same feature.
Session Manager extends the built-in Session Restore, so does use the sessionstore.js in addition to storing multiple session data in its own files.
there are two #'d sessionstore.js files, both modified on 1/26, I installed those extensions after the problem started, so while they may not be helping things they cannot have caused the issue to start (I am happy to disable them and see what happens), sessionbox at least seems to show my proper session from before the most recent crash, although I had no luck trying to open it
You should remove the numbered sessionstore-##.js files as they shouldn't be there.
so I gave up, uninstalled (and didn't save any settings, although I made a copy of my sessionstore.js), coppied that sessionstore.js into the new profile, and same issue, my session is set to the one from months ago and will not update
Did you try to start in the new profile without copying the sessionstore.js file?
