Can you help understand why firefox v.29 won't install on my pc?

If you're on Vista/7/8, try right clicking the installer and clicking Run As Administrator. Usually that should do it.

Try to download the full package instead of the Stub (compressed) versions available on mozilla.org
Download the Firefox Setup 29.0.exe
I got a different result this time but it still didn't install. This time the status bar (extracting) made it to 96% then disappeared. Any help would be appreciated.
