E-mails disappear completely.

When restarting Thunderbird all E-Mails before January 13th disappered completely. Even the folder "sent E-Mails" is completely empty. Every custom subfolder disappered completely. Can I restore these E-Mails at all or at least what precautions or settings must be tweaked for something like this to not happen again.
