Is there a way to move the Message Preview panel to the side of the page, like it is in Outlook? It's very inconvenient having it at the bottom of the page.

Try View/Layout (or AppMenu/Customize/Layout) set to Vertical View to have the Message Pane on the right side. Further options with MoreLayouts.
