Email numbers
My wife and I each have our own Thunderbird accounts. They were created a long time ago, at different times. I’m pretty sure that they were not set up identically. She has recently experienced a problem: the number of new emails downloaded (as shown in the lower left corner of the screen) doesn’t match with the number of new and unread emails listed in the Inbox (the emails shown in boldface). Something else, though I think related: In the upper left corner of the screen, on the same line as the word Inbox, is a small circle with a number inside. I think that number gives the number of unread emails in the Inbox. Her number shows 20 but the actual number (boldface) is 15. Is this a serious problem? Is it a problem at all? If so, how to fix it? Thanks.

The number of emails downloaded and the number of unread emails in the inbox are at best only vaguely related. Some perhaps went to the junk folder as spam could be a very simple reason they do not match. There are many more.
The number you indicate in the circle is the number unread, but if the folder has sub folders and they are not visible the number shown in the unread mail in the hidden folder tree as well as the visible folder (in this case inbox)
When using the POP protocol all mail is supposed to be downloaded as unread, not so if you use IMAP. SO you will need to check in account settings > server settings to make sure which is used. IMAP can and does get new mail in Thunderbird that is "read" usually on your phone.
Our server type is POP. The issue continues but, because of your explanation, she is not as concerned as previously. Thank you.
