Why Does FireFox Crash on this page?
After resetting Firefox, it still crashes on this html page, even though Chrome and IE have no problem with it. http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/firefoxnotcrash.html Why?
This page does not crash... firefoxnotcrash.htm
The difference between the two pages is right at the end, were the crashing file has a valid < to open a <div tag, where the non crasher has the < removed. Evidently, FF does not like that div.
An error message instead of crashing and taking all the system memory would be something the developers might want to consider adding in a future release. I would vote for adding the error message and removing the password deleter that can unannouned with the last upgrade.
man....
p.s. I would have to say, Firefox's way of crashing when no other browsers crash, with no error message and taking all the system memory from my computer into its death dive, has to be worst but I ever saw.

CORRECTION, Sorry for typos in original posting.: After resetting Firefox, it still crashes on this html page, even though Chrome and IE have no problem with it. http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/firefoxcrash.html Why?

One more correction: I would vote for adding the error message and removing the password deleter that came unannouned with the last upgrade.
I tried both, no problem.

Still does not answer my question. I did not ask how to fix it. I asked why this is happening?
Are you sure that you posted the correct link? The page source of the two links that you posted seems to be the same.

That page source also looks weird as it ends with two closing </div> </div> and no closing </body></html>.
The validator shows a few errors about unclosed div tags.
cor-el, thank you for taking time to look at this, especially after I have messed up the posting of the problem. You are 100% correct, those two files are the same, the one named firefoxcrash.html and the one named firefoxnotcrash.html.
I think I have this organized now, so here another shot. I also will explain what is going on with the weird page.
This file still crashes FF on my Windows 7 computer: http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/firefoxcrash.html
Two more links, one to another file that crashes ff, and one to a file that does not. CRASHES:
DOES NOT CRASH
In that directory, this file does not crash my browser.
The difference between the two files is that the crash edition has this:
The one that does not crash my browser has this instead. div id="subPanel_preload" class="subpanel"> div id="titletexto" class="subheadline"> ??</div> div id="titletexto">ModsForum Topics_preload</div></div>
Not much good comes from that file not crashing, because the div tags are not formed, not opening with <.
The reason I put the tags like that is through trial and error, narrowed the crash down to occurring only when that div tag was formed. why that div tag crashes FF is a big mystery to me. It does not crash any other browser.
I have no idea why the browser is crashing on that div.
Fyi, this is a page under development, mid-stream through a change. A working version of the file before recent changes is viewable here: http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/forumDataWorkspot/demoForFireFoxGuys/showLevels.php
cor-el, Regarding the validator, that is a red herring, right? Improper markup is not normally a browser crasher. I just want to make sure that the reason for the crash is that FF cannot gracefully handle imperfect markup.
Darnit, I did it again, forgot to put in the links, here they are: Two more links, one to another file that crashes ff, and one to a file that does not.
CRASHES: http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/forumDataWorkspot/syschecks_mods/crashesFirefox.html
DOES NOT CRASH http://howtothinksideways.com/zdevDanAllen/forumDataWorkspot/syschecks_mods/doesNotCrashFF.html
The difference between the two files is that the crash edition has this:
<div id="subPanel_preload" class="subpanel"><div id="titletexto" class="subheadline"> ??</div> <div id="titletexto">ModsForum Topics_preload</div></div>

I accessed both links. No problem on my system.
I think it's something on your system that has the problem.

In the address bar, type about:crashes. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.
Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.
Can you try to resize the Firefox window to see if that has effect?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
- Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.
