Forgotten my thunderbird email password
I can't set up Thunderbird on my new laptop, because I've forgotten my password. It's not showing up on the "Saved passwords" pane when I open the security tab.
Can anyone help?

Password is the same password you use when you logon to see your webmail account for that email address using a browser.
On the logon webpage there should be a 'forgotten password' link for you to use.

You are looking on your old device for than saved password I hope. Otherwise contact your mail provider for assistance in resetting it.

Hi Matt, Thanks for the reply. That's my problem, the old machine is little more than a paperweight now. Will contact my mail provider today. Thanks again

I use a gmail e-mail address but prefer to use Thunderbird for my e-mails. Problem is that Thunderbird now keeps asking me for my password for imap. I logged into gmail using my browser and changed my password, but Thunderbird still does not recognise it. I'm going nuts! Help please?
re :I logged into gmail using my browser and changed my password, but Thunderbird still does not recognise it.
Have you removed the stored old password from Thunderbird? In gmail webmail have you selected to use what gmail term as 'less secure apps' option? If yes, at the prompt to enter password, did you also select to remember the password? If yes, is the correct password now stored in Thunderbird?
Where are passwords stored? Tools > Options > Security > Passwords tab or Menu icon > Options > Options > Security > Passwords tab click on 'Saved Passwords' click on 'show Passwords'
Thanks for info. But I don't understand it! I use Google Chrome for my browser. I can't find the gmail term "less secure options tab". In Thunderbird, there is no 'Tools' option so where do I find the 'Tools' option & passwords tab please? I have a MacBook Air laptop which is using OSX OS software. I feel that Google has done something to my set up and screwed my Thunderbird e-mail system?
Oh just click this link https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
As you have finally mentions you use a mac, substitute the tools > options menu for the Thunderbird menu > preferences.
Thanks for all the information. Problem now resolved. I uninstalled the Thunderbird software from my MacBook. I then downloaded the latest version and set up my accounts again. This found my correct passwords and everything is now running ok for me. Thanks again for your suggestions.
