A popup keeps threatening to close my foxfire site if I do not respond to your request to accept ads or not to accept ads, however your link to it does not work when I click on it. This has been going on now for at least a month. If it does not stop or get fixed I will delete Mozilla from my computer.

Sorry, had two tabs open and this was meant for the other one.

Could I suggest updating to Firefox 41? It was released last Tuesday and makes a significant change to how the new tab page works.

Firefox 41 no longer uses the browser.newtab.url setting in about:config because it was constantly attacked by malware. Starting in Firefox 41, you need an add-on to change the new tab page. And, conversely, if your new tab page is hijacked, you most likely need to remove a bad add-on.

Firefox doesn't demand that you view ads or decide not to view ads. This could be generated by a particular website which thinks you are blocking their ads, or by a bad add-on. I suggest investigating that second possibility further, as follows:

Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons, hijackers, and ad injectors. I know it seems long, but it's not that bad.

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. Bear in mind that all extensions are optional, none come with Firefox, and you can learn more about them by checking their reviews on the Add-ons site.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

I looked at the programs but I do not know what is important or not. I did click on the download 41 link so I will see what happens. As far as solving the problem I will not know till I see if it stops coming up. However I do appreciate your suggestions and hope it has solved the problem, thank you very much T-10-C.

I am sorry for the confusion it is not my site it is the first thing that comes up when I click on Mozilla FoxFire logo. I click on the link to tell it I do not want the ads and nothing and the same if I accept the ads. It says they have been trying for months to have me respond and will soon close my MFF membership.

Does the problem page appear only at startup, or any time you use the Home button or launch a new window using Ctrl+n? If those also have the problem, please check for a home page takeover. The home page setting can be found on the Options page, as described in this article: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

If the problem page appears any time you use your desktop shortcut, it could be "hijacked" with an extra address. You can check that by right-clicking the shortcut, choosing Properties and then examining the "Target" on the Shortcut tab. On Vista 32-bit, that should be no more and no less than the following, and any extra bits afterward can be removed:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If you want a second opinion on your extensions, you can copy/paste a list into a reply. The easiest place to copy the list from is the support information page. You can open that using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

If you scroll down a bit, you should see a large Extensions heading, followed by a table. If you select with the mouse from the word Extensions through the end of the table, you can copy using either Ctrl+c or right-click > Copy. Then you can paste into a reply here. It will look a bit messy, but don't worry about that, we're used to.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
