I've downloaded the newest version (English) of Firefox, cleared the cache, and yet I am still getting (I believe) French language buttons and tabs. I would like English only buttons, tabs, etc. I've set my language preferences to English-U.S. as well to no avail. Still French when I open new tabs. Thank you very much for any help and for your time.

Do you mean the toolbar/menu area of Firefox is in English, but some web pages display in French?

I'm confused about the new tab part: Firefox's built-in new tab page should follow the interface language of the browser. Is a different page appearing on a new tab?

You can see the built-in page described in this article: Customize your Firefox New Tab page. To double-check what page you're seeing, you can try the Page Info dialog. Either:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info

On the general panel, what do you see for Address? If you triple-click it, you can copy it using Ctrl+c.

I just re-read your subject line. If your interface is not in English, you'll need to reinstall the English version.

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 44.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) Note: For broadest compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(Other versions)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Can a cleanly reinstalled Firefox start up in a language that works better for you?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins
