somehow, yesterday (24th) 'safesurfs.net' took control over Firefox. It's been hell to say the least trying to find a way to GET RID OF IT. Naturally I don't trust ANY of the 'download our program' to remove safesurfs.... I searched you 'help' section, didn't see anything specific. I can't be the first so please, pretty please tell me the exact steps I need to do to GET RID OF IT. sadly AVG didn't trap it....though I'm sure some of the malware these days is mighty smart. things were a lot simpler when I fixed with ASR33 teletypes !! Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you managed to pick up a redirect virus. See this for a removal procedure. https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-safesurfs-net/

OK, it kinda worked BUT going to www.allischalmers.com/forum/default.asp STILL fails. OK, IF I don't exactly click on a 'bullet', I get sent all over the NET !! arrgh... After 47 powerdowns, cold boots, and 8 hours of testing I'm at my wits end. I even reloaded Firefoxes defaults, same problem. I also can't find 'browser.newtab.url' in 'about:config'. I saw that 'somewhere' as a possible 'cure'. it's be nice if you had a 'download this file' and it magically put Firefox back the way it was 48 hours ago..... Please, give me something that works ! A very frustrated Jay

What didn't work in that article?

Did you follow all the steps? Even the optional steps when the first three steps didn't work for you?

Did you ask for help here? https://malwaretips.com/forums/malware-removal-assistance.10/

BTW, browser.newtab.url has been gone from Firefox for quite a few versions now. 10 months ago it was a possible cure, but you haven't mentioned that your New Tab URL has been messed with - that shouldn't be happening with Firefox 47.
