When writing a message, the text sometimes changes spontaneously to a very small point size, and nothing short of closing and reopening the program will fix it.

In the midst of writing a message, the entire text of the message sometimes spontaneously changes to about 5-point type --- too small to read. If I highlight the text and try to change the font size, nothing happens. If I close the message without saving, and start a new message, the font size is still small, and will not change. If I close Thunderbird and then re-open it, everything operates fine again.

Haven't seen this complaint for a few years - what's your TB version? Do you see the same thing in safe mode (Help/Restart with Add-ons Disabled, or hold Shift when you launch TB)?

I went to Help > About Thunderbird to check my version. It was 45.8.0, but when I checked it, it started an automatic update, so now it's 52.1.0. Maybe that will solve the problem. I could try safe mode, but since it happens sporadically, who knows whether it will occur in safe mode? Thanks for your help. I'll see if the update fixes it.

Pay particular attention to if it occurs after you move the pointer with the mouser or paste. Also does it occur on an email address where you have a signature. There is a default -- between the mail body and the signature and removing it can result in artifacts from the signature to bleed into the body of the email

Thanks, Matt. My signature is a graphic, so I don't think any font attributes are spilling over into the main body of the email (if I follow what you are saying). It does seem to occur when I move my pointer. My touchpad on my laptop is acting up and becoming unresponsive (wearing out), so I've switched to a wireless mouse. The touchpad problem could be part of what's happening.
