I turn off my modem and computer overnight while sleeping as they are beside my bed. [The wifi, in such close proximity, seems to cause palpitations.] My computer was previously set to update in early hours of morning. I want to reset this time to coincide with the brief times it is switched on for use. I am using Windows 10 and am not very computer literate! Many thanks.

Sorry, not certain what 'launched for the day' means. Does Fire Fox do this at a certain time or are you simply referring to 'the first time I turn on my computer'? Can it update OK during the 4 hour period I have it turned on? [4PM to 8 PM]. many thanks.

It's the latter statement, the first time you turn on / boot your computer and log in. If you have an active Internet connection and Firefox is launched within the 4 hour window you have set, Firefox will check for updates on its first launch and ask you to restart if updates were installed.

Firefox doesn't have a "control" for automatic updates.

Firefox checks for the availability of an update the first time that Firefox is launched for the day. So, if the computer is turned off there is no way for Firefox to look for updates.

Now, if you are talking about Windows updates or updates for other applications, this isn't the place to look for an answer; but if the computer is turned off nothing can look for an update and nothing can be updated is Windows isn't running.
