Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Hi  ! Another thing to try is to run Firefox in Safe Mode :

If Firefox is not running : Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. If Firefox is running : 3-bar menu => ' ? ' (at the bottom of the dropdown) => 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Then OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click 'Start in Safe Mode' ( not 'Refresh' !)

See : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

If none of the above works, you could check for problems with the  places.sqlite  database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder :

Three times : bummer   !

Question though :

Did you try all that when you were still on Firefox version 55.0, or did you try it when you were already updated to Firefox version 55.0.1  ?

@happy112 55.0.1 its a brand new computer

I'm at my wits' end ...... the fact that this happens on a brand-new computer really puzzles me.

You've done all of the above and nothing works   -   the only thing I can think of now is to ask you to take a look at this article :

Can't add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You may have to restore a compressed .jsonlz4 backup manually.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

After days of battling and researching this problem after an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8, the suggestion to delete the places sqlite files and let it rebuild worked. Very fortunately, I had a recent copy of an old bookmarks file because I had cloned the original drive when I bought a new one. Saved my bacon !!!
