I've enabled spamassassin for Tbird and want to create a folder called 'spam' so that spam would go in there. I've managed to create that folder name but it has the junk mail icon instead of a regular folder icon in front of it. I've gone into my local files and have deleted the spam.msf and spam-1.msf, then disabled using Tbird's junk mail controls and when I restart Tbird the spam folder reappears with the same junk mail icon in front of it. So I'm not really sure that spamassassin will recognize that as a folder.

In account settings if you have enabled "trust junk mail headers set by spamassassin" then your SA filtered mail will always go to the Spam folder.

It's unclear what your goal is, because you haven't stated it, but here are some potentially useful articles:

Thanks Wayne - those articles are helpful... should I also have Tbird's junk mail enabled? I did click on trust headers of Spam Assassin but do I also need to enable Tbird's own junk mail system?

One does not require the other. I have both enabled for many years, with great success.

questions: 1) do you add the email addresses of the spam you want blacklisted? 2) I have auto delete enabled. it says messages with a score of 5 or higher will be deleted. 3) it says: set the number of hits that you wish to require before the system marks mail as spam. Why not set it at 2 if I know I want spam deleted before it reaches TBird?

more options

1. I have whitelisted and blacklisted based both on full address, domain address only, and wildcards 2. I have never used autodelete 3. never used it - so no opinion

OK.. will play with it.

I just found that it was a pain to be seeing 30 messages in my spam folder when many of them were repeats.
