reinstall windows 10 no backup
windows 10 update locked keyboard and mouse on my hp win 10 desktop (win 10 install on original win7). I had to take it to the shop and they re-installed windows 10. I have access to windows.old. I have been trying to copy my old profile to the newly installed thunderbird with no luck. Pprofiles in windows.old in appdata local thunderbird with profile tqx4o8hf.default with 3,676 Files, 336 Folders In roaming in windows old it has tqx4o8hf.default with 477 Files, 54 Folders.
I have tried to copy the profile (but which one, local or roaming) over the existing profile, create a new profile, etc. I have opened profile manager, etc. So far no luck. In the knowledge database different terminology is sometimes used so I am not sure what to do. Any help appreciated. Last step I tried "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p created a new profile, copied the larger of the two profiles (from local) still getting the initial setup screen (create a new, use existing.
Additional I currently am using a new fix1 profile, but it is at the level of profile to the copied windows.old profile copied to the documents folder. Should I have just set it to the tqx4o8hf.default with 3,676 Files, 336 Folders described above? Or the old copied version from the roaming folder?

You can just copy the old profile contents over the new one. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Create_a_new_profile_and_copy_the_old_one_over_it for instructions.
If you've already created a new profile before you don't have to do that once again.

The profile is underneath 'Roaming'. Ignore what's underneath 'Local'.

First, thanks. Second, that's the I copied, but I forgot to mention that I copied from the profile folder level, should I just copy the appdata roaming thunderbird profile tqx4o8hf.default 477 Files, 54 Folders and NOT from the folder level of profile (which contains other folders and files)?

Fixed!!! (mostly)
copied just the roaming tqx4o8hf.default to the appdata users thunderbird in a new folder I created a new fixed2 profile and pointed it to that folder made that profile the default. Got all the email back but it is not downloading new email because of "server error". That may not be related to this issue, it has happened before, I have to figure out how to force it to request a password (or else the server may be flukey).
Many thanks for you help which pointed me in the right direction and to all the tbird folks for the messages I used to almost get me there.
My bitcoin check is in the mail.<grin>

That's an entirely different problem. You may want to mark this topic as 'Solved', and create a new topic for the "server error" issue. Please provide more details about the problem in the new topic.

Ah, but you see, that was part of the problem, that article said to copy the profile but not at what level, the overall "profile" folder or the xyz.default folder level. My problem seems to have been that I was too high up.
It is the nature of explanations in those articles. Too much and you confuse people with options. Too little and you fail to cover all the options <shrug>
