I have my dpi set to 597 .. maybe this is why it forces itself to tablet mode Please let me know if there is any way to disable it.

The tablet experience applies to devices with a screen size above 7" (or above 480dpi). You can use Android's developer options to specify a custom value, like 479dpi.
