Why doesn't Thunderbird support OAuth2 when using Google POP Servers?

Hi. I've read that Google didn't previously support OAuth2 when accessing Google POP servers. However, Google now says that functionality is available. Specifically they say "For non-Gmail clients, Gmail supports the standard IMAP, POP, and SMTP protocols. The Gmail IMAP, POP, and SMTP servers have been extended to support authorization via the industry-standard OAuth 2.0 protocol." That information is copied from this page: https://developers.google.com/gmail/imap/imap-smtp

When I try to configure Thunderbird to access a Google POP server, I don't see an option for OAuth2 authentication. Is this perhaps a recent Google change that hasn't been incorporated into Thunderbird yet or has Thunderbird decided they don't want to add this functionality? If it is a recent Google change, is Thunderbird planning to implement that new functionality?

Thanks in advance for the informaiton :)
