I kept all my emails in approximately 100 clients subfolders under 'local folders' - 3 years history that I refer to constantly. Lots of legal stuff. Just logged on to thunderbird for the at least 10th time today and they are all gone. My six email addresses, inbox, sent, drafts etc are all here but all the subfolders under local folder are gone. Are they gone? Are they stored anywhere?

Help/Troubleshooting, click Open Folder, close TB. Open Mail/Local Folders. Do you see (large) files with the folder names and no file extension? If so, delete the corresponding .msf files, restart TB, and see if the folders appear under Local Folders.
