WIndows 10: Before the latest updates, I'd get an icon when I got a new message, then it would disappear when I read it. Now, there's an icon constantly there that shows the number of unread messages. This is useless. How do I return to the previous setting? The old icon is no longer available in Notification Area settings.

Are you using 88beta? It is 'experimenting' with a new notification icon that shows the number of new messages on the taskbar icon. I don't know of any way to revert to the old notification area icon without switching to the 78 release version.
