Windows 10 Firefox 88/89 64-bit PC It seems there was a compact mode before version 89? I don't know if that's what I want.

I would like to have a simple selection in FF Preferences to turn OFF the Proton stuff. I am not an IT geek and I'm not comfortable doing things like changing CSS code - if I knew how to do that stuff, I'd be using Linux not Windows. Since I'm stuck with Windows, I rely on a good browser like FF v.88 to take care of the technical stuff.

Version 89 seems to be OK with Proton shut off, but I hear this is a temporary fix. I also don't know if shutting off Proton fixed the spacing nightmare in Bookmarks - I lost mine reloading v.88 and haven't had a chance to look for them. (v.89 is on the PC upstairs - this one is still on v.88.)

For some context on the anger at FF's change, those of us who use Facebook on a regular basis were forced into a horrendous update in late 2021 which barely works, and Facebook continuously changes code, fixing what isn't broken. To find that the browser we've relied on for years did the same with no warning is very upsetting.

I'd like to get a message directly to Mozilla but "Submit Feedback" has been shut down for over a week.

If you were using compact mode previously, it should still be selected in "Customize Toolbar" (in the 3 bar menu at the left end of the navigation bar). If it isn't there, enter about:config into the url bar of a new tab, accept the risk and search for browser.compactmode.show Change it to true. If that's not enough, search for proton. Change each true to false. Otherwise: http://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html

Thanks, I don't have Compact Mode here in 88, so I doubt I'll have it in 89.

Right now I have proton off/false, but as to your "otherwise" suggestion, as I said in my OP

Chris Ilias These ARE my issues with the new design, and YES I need a permanent solution!

the biggest complaint about 89 is the look and turning proton off makes it less ugly and less like edge .

that option is going in update 90 , what do you think will keep people using ff if we can no longer actually change the look ? ff changbility is what made us come to ff in the first place ,now it looks like any other browser ,so why would we stay or come back to a copy of something better ?

ff is shooting its self in the face with its un needed and unwanted updates .

I've been searching for ways to make the bookmark folder icons solid and in the process discovered how many disgruntled FF users have been very happy to find out that Proton could be disabled.

I am concerned that Mozilla may be getting a false sense of the level of acceptance for Proton-style UI. So many people have turned it off using the about:config tweak, that once having solved their main problems with the browser, they no longer need to post in forums or switch browsers.

If the option to disable Proton is removed, I believe the outcry is going to be much louder than it is now. Personally, I am glad to be warned, as I will now be disabling Firefox updates instead.

Hi everyone, It doesn't look like the person who posted the original question is going to respond, and others seem to be using this thread for there own issues, so I'm going to lock this thread.
