I've just installed Thunderbird for the first time, so forgive me if there's an obvious solution to this, but if there is I can't find it. I set the theme to dark mode, and My Inbox, like every other Thunderbird window, is in dark mode, but when I open an email the window itself is dark mode, but the email is not. When I open the email in Gmail it displays in dark mode, so I don't see why opening it in Thunderbird it isn't, when all the rest of the Thunderbird client is dark mode. Sudden jump to white background with black text is blinding! How do I make emails show in dark mode as well?

Thanks

Try Dark Reader. Tools/Add-ons & Themes, enter dark reader in the search box.

Thanks for the reply. I have that on 3 different browsers, didn't know it had a Thunderbird version, too. Added it, but unfortunately it doesn't solve the problem.

I don't think the colors of html mail can be entirely modified, but for plain text, setting the Text and Background colors in Preferences/General/Language & Appearance, Colors, works for any theme.

I'm new to Thunderbird. I dl'ed and set it up for use with my Gmail address. When I open an email in Gmail, it displays with black background/white lettering. When I open the exact same email via Thunderbird though, it displays with white background/black lettering, even though I've set the Thunderbird theme to dark mode. The inbox and all other windows in Thunderbird display in dark mode, but the emails themselves do not.

I get that it should work, but it doesn't. So as a new user, I'm trying to find out what I'm missing, if anything, that will allow my emails to display in dark mode.

I did this, and it seems to work on the emails, but then I went to change the font size and now all the drop down menus in preferences just display a black box, a grey scroll bar, and no text at all. There's got to be a better way.

Try searching the forum for dark theme topics. I don't use it regularly, so there might be some hidden tricks.

I have the same problem with the drop down menus: black text on black background!!! I have the dark theme and color preferences for text set to light gray and background to black. This was working fine in TB 78.x !!!
