all programs on my desktop (ie. Word, Mo Firefox, Internet Exp) is suddenly showing the Adobe icon next to it and clicking any program brings up a window that says Adobe Reader can not open the program

Looks that the .exe key (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe) in the registry is broken.

You can try to ask on a Windows related forum on how to restore that key.
