I downloaded the installer from the website to my Desktop, clicked on the dmg icon which opened two things; a "drive" icon and a window with the firefox logo/icon pointing to the applications folder. When I dragged the logo/icon into the Applications folder I recieved this message: "A newer item named “Firefox” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?" Since I am running 3.6.16, I found this confusing and did not proceed. Didn't want to screw up what I had. Is it ok to proceed despite this msg.

This is normal - the internal timestamp of 3.6.16 file is higher than that of 4.0. It is ok to proceed and replace 3.6.16 with 4.0.

ok, thanks. I'll try again. 20 minutes later.......it worked and all is well. Even figured out how to move the home button back to the left side where I was accustomed to looking for it. For me....an incredible accomplishment! Thanks again.
