Firefox has just begun to refuse to open Gmail, saying that the cerificate is invalid and it refuses to remember the exception.
On submitting this query, Firefox told me that the Mozilla cerificate also failed as it is out of date. Other sites have the same problem though all are trusted sites.

I see a new certificate (Jul 9 2011) for Gmail, so make sure that the date and time on your computer are correct.

Thanks for that - so obvious and so simple. The time and date had reset to their default values after a friend installed a new motherboard.
