How do I get the firefox icon back on my computer? When I upgraded firefox, it put a square icon on my computer and I want the original icon. I deleted the square icon. What do I need to do to get this back? And, my firefox did not upgrade in ubuntu when I tried to upgrade it. What can I do?

You can change the icon on the desktop via the right-click context menu > Properties and click the icon in that window.
Browse to the icons folder in the Firefox installation folder that appears on the command line and select the mozicon128.png icon is that folder.

If there is only a firefox command without a path then you probably can find Firefox in the /usr/lib/firefox directory or you can start Firefox and open the System Monitor to see the path of the Firefox program.

Hi Demanett-

It sounds like your computer is in an unknown state if the upgrade failed, and you also deleted part of the install. I would recommend uninstalling, and then upgrading to the latest version by following these steps:

  • Get the latest version: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
  • Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
  • Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I hope that helps!

I will try this, but am out of town at the current time. I have linux ubuntu. Will these instructions still work for this and do I need to get the latest version of firefox first before uninstalling firefox? Also, Ubuntu has it's own software so do I get firefox there through ubuntu or do I go out of ubuntu and get firefox from your website? Please advise quickly as I need to get this fixed asap. Thank you, Dianne

Thank you rbillngs. I was out of town for a couple of weeks and am just now getting to all your helpful information. I will try doing this, but I have the tar files for 7.0 and 8.0 for firefox and neither one of them works so I just want to go back to the firefox version that came with ubuntu 10.04. Can you tell me what version this is? Is it 3.0? Please advise quickly. Thank you, Dianne

This is in ubuntu and I don't understand what you are saying. I need very specific and detailed information as I am not real savvy when it comes to computers. I already right clicked on it, but it is just a picture and it says I can either install it or exit. It is not the firefox.exe file so I can bring it back. I don't understand what you are telling me. Please give me better and more explicit, step by step instructions! Thanks, Dianne

Thank you for your help, although I figured it out on my own. I uninstalled firefox and then went into the synaptic manager to find firefox 3.5. After finding this, I went into ubuntu software and reinstalled all the firefox for 3.0, 3.2.63 and 3.50. I now have my firefox browser back! Yeah! Thanks for your help though.
