  • You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:

You probably do not need an extension at all, spell checking is built-in to Firefox and has a dictionary. See

dmcritchie, that is only correct if one is using the en-US (and I think fr local also) as all other locals do not come with a dictionary due to licensing reasons.

The OP is using the en-GB version of Firefox 3.6.23 (as per system details link) and it does not come with a dictionary.

Thanks to the repliers but - This is crazy! All this confusion, difficulty and doubt over whether or not I can use the dictionaries I've installed. Stuff about copyright law??? - for an Australian English dictionary I've installed in Australia and want to to use in Australia???

Maybe I need to switch to Chrome!

"cor-el: You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.

I've already said that I CANNOT see the Dictionary on the drop-down or submenu when I right-click.
