all bookmarks disappeared; which bookmarks files do I need to restore?
My computer was destroyed by a virus, and has now had Windows re-installed. Everything was wiped out, including my Firefox bookmarked sites. I have online backup (Carbonite), which has lots of Firefox files saved. Do I replace "json" files, or "places.sqlite" files - what exactly do I need to replace, and where do I put it?
Thanks so much -

Make sure that you remove all other places files in the profile folder if you put back a backup copy of places.sqlite.

You can import the latest JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder that has all your bookmarks.
YES! I have restored everything I needed. I followed the instructions, but actually, it was more simple than the article described. I copied/pasted my backup files, one at a time, into my existing profile folder, over-writing the files already there (which had hardly anything in them, as my computer has only been back up for two days). No need to create a new profile folder at all - this worked just fine. (I did back up the old profile folder and rename it, putting it on my desktop temporarily, just in case my solution was wrong.)
Thank you so much for your help. I am lost without my bookmarks!
Sincerely, Susan
I have lost my firefox bookmarks overnight. The recover history does not work and there is no, that I can see, bookmarksbackup folder. I do have a places.sqlite file of recent date. Also, something has happened to firefox in that I can't remove it via the control panel add/remove feature. I also can't restore a json file written on my desktop using the same version of firefox as on the laptop.
I am running 7.0.1 because the later versions of firefox will not run on my laptop using win xp home. Since the places.sqlite file has the bookmarks and other history, how do I use that to recover? I did successfully import a bookmarks.html file BUT it was empty except for the usual labels making that no help at all.
