If the above does not help you may need to consider that it could be part of a deeper malware problem, if so see

Please say what you have tried.

Remember such software

  • may not have easily identifiable names.
  • may be part of a plugin not listed by Firefox and only uninstallable by using the Vista control panel
  • if it is associated with malware it may be difficult to find and delete.

Whilst I am not aware of a connection with anything called sputnik that may well be advice from someone with knowledge of mail.ru problems and so should be considered worth trying.

Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

Try resetting your browser. Go to Tools or the orange Firefox button > Help > Restart with Add-ons disabled. You can also close Firefox. Hold Shift key while you click on Firefox shortcut. Select "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" > "Make changes and restart".

Just take note that you will need to reinstall your add-ons and set your homepage again. Your saved passwords and bookmarks will also need to be backed up as they will be erased. If you need to back them all up, use FEBE add-on. It will allow you to back up and restore your other add-ons, passwords, bookmarks, form-fill history, cookies, and more.

Ok, let's do this: Read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles, and follow the directions to create a brand new profile. Start Firefox up. Do you still have the mail.ru toolbar? If not, then awesome! We will then just have to move your information from your old profile to your new one. Read Recovering important data from an old profile, and only transfer the least amount of info that you can.

well i had this problem too...

Problem was:

(mail.ru bar, mail.ru search provider, mail.ru registry keys, mail.ru folder)

in the search provider panel you can just remove mail.ru easily by selecting and removing it

but i searched along regedit (execute:regedit) and i noticed a lot of keys related to mail.ru which i deleted

in program files (windows) there is a folder mail.ru too (so delete it too)

well, it didn't solve my problem so i went to explorer bar and i wrote %appdata% and then i deleted the MOZILLA folder

i lost my bookmarks etc etc, but firefox is now as default, cleaned

sorry the bad english :/

i recently checked my addons looking for something else and finally found the mail.ru and still active, so I disabled it and removed it without problems. But that wasn't until after I did the procedures mentioned in my previous post.

You wouldn't have lost your bookmarks if you backed them up to a file, or used FEBE extension, or saved the bookmarks online using xmarks so you will always be synchronized with it wherever you go and whatever computer you use that has firefox in it: http://www.xmarks.com/

You also didn't need to erased everything from the firefox folder. You could have just reset your preferences by running the safe mode of firefox to disable all user preferences and reset the brower to defaults.

If you are having any problem with mail.ru toolbar. I thought this would help you. go to C:\Users\YOUR USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Pro… You will find something like {37964A3C-4EE8-47b1-8321-34DE2C39BA4D} can be several profiles. move any of these folders somewhere else restart mozilla if the bar is gone you have moved the correct folder delete it, if not the one move it back and move another one. Hints. This Toolbar creates a profile and inside has a folder with name "chrome"

Uninstall and delete Also can uninstall ,mail.ru guard

search and delete sputnik
