I was unable to send from my talktalk mail account after upgrading win8 to win8.1. I reinstalled Thunderbird over the top of existing installation but problem remained. (I've checked server settings!). In a fit of madness I deleted that mail account from Thunderbird having read in the forum that this doesn't delete the actual mail, just the account details. However, having recreated the talktalk mail account I can't find my emails! Help - some of these are fairly urgent. Anyone able to help a) recover the emails? b) offer a solution to the original problem? Hopefully, Ted

Problem identified - and it's not a T-bird problem. Avast Free antivirus was set to scan outgoing mail and created an error that was not recognised by either T-bird or Avast. Switching off that aspect of Avast sorted it! Amazing sense of relief after hours of trying other diagnoses. On the positive side, without it I wouldn't have discovered MozBackup. Thanks for your efforts on my behalf!

The recommended settings for the outgoing server are:

server name: smtp.talktalk.net
port: 587
Connection security: None
Authentication: Password, transmitted insecurely
User name: your full email address

Thanks for your interest! The server you specify IS the one showing in the account info but I don't know how to check which port is being used - I can't find it anywhere in Thunderbird. Also, the settings worked fine until the windows upgrade. I'm using Avast free antivirus so the windows firewall is turned off and can't be blocking the port. In my panic at losing my emails I forgot that I'd saved them all using MozBackup (phew) and was able to reinstall all profiles so the only problem remaining is that Thunderbird states that, for an unknown reason, it is unable to send mail using the smtp server shown in the settings i.e. the correct ones.

The settings are in Tools(or AppMenu/Options)/Account Settings/Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane.

But it simply states that the outgoing server is smtp.talktalk.net and this, although correct according to the talktalk website, doesn't work - although it DID before I upgraded win 8 to 8.1

Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom left of Account Settings, and then report what you have in the right pane for connection security, port etc.
