Firefox suggested I do a Refresh to speed up browser etc. I did so and everything was wiped out. Firefox logo still appears in start bar but when I click on it no firefox browser appears, totally blank tabs appear. All bookmarks wiped out in all three browsers I use: Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I am totally in trouble.

When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Refreshing Firefox {web link} is a LAST RESORT ! !

Refreshing Firefox -- easily fix most problems

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. Everything else, like user settings and add-ons are removed.

You are not the first to complain of this. I have filed a Bug Report.

Bug 1141385 - Users are told to Refresh Firefox without being warned of results https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1141385

Your Passwords, Bookmarks, and History should have been placed in the new profile. Are they there?

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Just got your responses, had to walk away from computer so I didn't panic and do something "don't just do something, sit there'! There is nothing on my desktop with anything 'Firefox' except the browser icon. Thank you all for responding and for doing it so quickly!

I am not competent to carry out these instructions. I do not know how to "uninstall my current version of Firefox..." and at the same time "NOT remove 'personal data'.

Ok. It all worked. I did it and I got it all back. Thank you very much. I just had to go very slowly. I'm not computer savvy nor linear, so what is clear as glass to you is mudwall to me. But you were right and what you told me to do worked. Thank you!
