I have a complete back up of all files on the HDD before downgrade to Win7 from Win8. Cannot now find old FF bookmarks! Where are they?
I had a lot of research bookmarked on FF in Win 8, had an upgrade to Win 8.1 which then locked me out of PC as wouldn't recognise password. Backed up all data on HDD and installed Win7. Cannot now locate old FF bookmarks. I have done a deep scan of HDD and cannot locate json or SQLite files. Are they gone forever?

Ok, when you downgrade did you have the old windows still? If you go to your C:\ Do you see windows.old?
Also I strongly suggest checking out Firefox Sync you will love it! https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-up-firefox-sync
It saves everything of your firefox on the cloud!
You can also try;
FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose. As to your old bookmarks, If you saved all of the files from before you changed the system, all we have to do is find them. Do you have those files available? Look for your user profile in C:\Users\(your name) \AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. Once you enter the right profile, look for the folder bookmarkbackups.
