After the latest Firefox update on a Wnidows 7 machine, Firefox opens just a blank (black) screen. It worked fine until the latest update. It will not open in "safe mode". I have tried several clean installs and using various other compatibility settings. I have also tried various display changes. The shut down X is still under the black bit as I can by guess work activate this.

Getting a black screen after updating to Firefox 33 can be caused by a problem with hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift/Options key.

Disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.
