Can I download Thunderbird again to solve problem
Thunderbird has stopped collecting and downloading emails from my Talktalk account. They download perfectly on my iPad. Yesterday evening the emails suddenly downloaded from Talktalk, but equally suddenly they have stopped. The server settings have been checked but weren't changed. Talktalk have checked their side of things, but they say all is OK. Messages I have sent are getting through. If there is a technical problem in my version of Thunderbird, unlikely I know, would it be safe to download Thunderbird again? I obviously don't want to lose my folders with their enclosed messages. Would it just take over from the copy I have? If I do that and there is still a problem, I will have to think again. Is this a common problem? I have very slow broadband, so I suppose an error in the original download, or in an update might have caused this. I use an Apple Mac.

You can just download and re-install Thunderbird; your data is stored separately in the so-called profile.
But these issues are usually related to settings, and the settings are of course in the profile, so all your efforts may be for nought.
Zenos,
Thank you for this quick reply to my query. It will save me from wasted effort.
If the problem is in the settings and I haven't changed them, it seems that I may have to use a different email program. Is there a way of delving deeper into the profile to check whether anything has been changed in error. It seems odd that it says it is connected but nothing is downloaded, especially as the emails are being downloaded to my iPad.
