I installed Highlighter add-on to Thunderbird 31.4.0 with Windows 8.1. If I select text in composition, pull down the Highlighter menu and click on a color, the selected text color does not change. Stays with default. Same result if I just pick a color and follow up with typing.

I'm comparing this with Mac Mail where highlighting comes with the Mac. All you do is select text, pick a color, and voila! the change is made. Also Mac has a full spectrum of colors possible, with varying saturations. I don't see that with the Highlighter add-on; you have seven choices, two of which are gray.

Add ons are 3rd party software. You need to contact the add on author for their support.

I tried Highlighter 0.6.5 in TB 31.4/Win 7. In a Write window, choose a colour from the Highlighter drop-down in the Formatting Bar. This turns the page background to that colour, so to return to the default (white), just select Clear from the drop-down. Next, highlight text and click the Highlighter icon; the text will be highlighted in the chosen colour.

If you select another colour, the background changes, so again you have to select Clear. Select some text, then click the icon to apply the new colour to that text. To remove highlighting from any text, just select it and then click Clear.

Airmail: I don't know how to contact the developer--yet. I was hoping this support would get me what I needed without my having to hunt him down. With so few colors available I'm not sure it's worth it.

sfhowes: thx for the try. Sounds reasonable but didn't work for me. I tried choosing color, then clearing, then selecting text, then choosing color. The background did not change on the first step; I clicked Clear anyway, and the selected text also did not change. I'm guessing this is yet another obstacle with Windows 8.1.

Btw, I recommend you stick with Win 7 as long as possible. My sister had Win 7, "upgraded" to 8.1 and now she's spitting bricks over it. I came from XL, and if I could backgrade down to XL on my new machine, I'd do it even without MS support. I have Eudora on the old XL machine which has a built in select and color tool that works just fine.

It works the same on Win 8.1 (tested), so I can only suggest that if it's not working for you, then you probably have another extension that is in conflict. Perhaps a theme, or a composition add-on such as Stationery.

sfhowes: thx, what you say sounds reasonable. I appreciate your testing it. Since I'm pretty much a tech dunce, I think I may pass on the suggestion, it ain't worth the time. There are always italics and bolds. Meanwhile I'll just wax nostalgic for the days of XP (I meant XP before, not XL, this is what happens when you get to age 69) with Eudora.  :-)
