enabling java script
Firefox47.0.1; using Yahoo! as home page can not open Yahoo! Mail [get blank page] and some websites. A few websites open partially. Went to Firefox troubleshooting and it said JavaScript is not enabled. Found these directions: "In Firefox, you can configure whether JavaScript in web pages is permitted to execute or not. To allow JavaScript in Firefox: 1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Tools menu and then select Options. On the menu bar, click on the Firefox menu and select Preferences....At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Edit menu and select Preferences."
"Firefox window"............where?
I went to "Tools" > "Options" but didn't see "Preferences"
Everything worked fine and then one later, everything appears to be "mission impossible."
Using IE in lieu of Firefox. Pls help me get back to the latter!

Those instructions are very old. The preference to disable / enable JavaScript was removed from Options 4 or 5 years ago. Too many users were disabling JavaScript and then wondering why many websites no longer worked or didn't work properly.
There is a hidden pref in about:config (typed in the URL bar).
javascript.enabled which is true by default. If that is false now, double-click it to 'toggle' it to true.
Beyond that, see this basic troubleshooting Firefox support article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems
