My auto-scroll 3rd button does not work in FireFox 3.6. It worked in previous FF versions.

Type about:config in the address bar and hit Enter key. When you see a warning, click I'll be careful, I promise! button

-> In the Filter bar, type trackpoint

  • right-click ui.trackpoint_hack.enabled preference, click Modify and change the value from -1 to 0(zero) or 1
  • click OK

-> Close about:config tab and Restart Firefox

Check which value (0 or 1) works.

OUT OF DESPERATION . . . (didn't expect anything to work) In the mouse settings I changed from "Auto-Scrolling" to "Middle-Button" and the Auto-Scrolling works.

BUT ! ! ! Now in I-Explorer 8.0, Opera, Chrome and 1-Browser the scroll is jumpy (jumps, line to line), not smooth.

This is still not right. Once again, why is Mozilla being so obstinate?

If that is a left, right, and scroll wheel / middle-button mouse, with no additional buttons, have you tried using the default Windows mouse drivers?

The middle mouse button only works properly in Firefox if you set that button in the Control Panel > Mouse to the default middle-click. Any other setting like auto-scrolling will interfere with the normal behavior of that button.

What I have is a 5 button 2 wheel mouse. In any other browser than FireFox I can set the 4 (out of 5) buttons to whatever I wish and everything simply works. So the bottom line is FireFox has software problems.

The normal behavior of the middle button (any of the non-main 4 other buttons) is whatever I set it for, they are nonspecific.

Like I said, this mouse has no issues in ANY other software, just FireFox. It is FireFox that needs reworking, not my mouse.

It truly amazes me how THICK some software programers are about there software. They think they are the only ones who are right.

Default Windows mouse? Your kidding.

Why would I want my 5 button, 2 wheel mouse to act like a standard 3 button, 1 wheel mouse? I got this mouse to mult-task without constantly fudging with the software.

What you're saying is,... Buy a car with 4 wheels and only use 3.

Just make sure that the mouse button that Firefox identifies as the middle-mouse button is set as such and it should work. You can assign functions to other mouse buttons if there are more buttons. Usually the other two buttons are used to navigate back (Alt + cursor Left) and forward (Alt + cursor Right).
