updated to Firefox 5 - I set it up this way: tools, options, use custom setting for history, all checked except private browsing - settings tab does not show - but every time I close Firefox, it goes back to the default, which is Remember History - why does it do this? my older version worked perfectly -

Choosing the "Use custom settings for history" setting doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.

If Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting then that is an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings are not the default to make you aware that changes were made.

If all History settings are default then you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History" and the custom settings are hidden.
