Once I open the Bookmarks menu and my bookmarks are displayed I can't go back to my home page.
I click on the Bookmarks icon and the Bookmarks list opens. My "Awesome Bar" disappears and when I try to get back to my homepage or out of the bookmarks list I can't. I end up shutting down my laptop just to restart my browser. Something's not right. Any suggestions? I'm sure I'm just missing something really obvious....

Try to rename (or delete) the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
