I use Windows 7 on a HP Pavilion dm4-1160us Entertainment Notebook. I use Firefox extensively, and have not had this problem with any prior versions. I upgraded to 18.0.1 on Jan 18th and now Firefox crashes every time I close a tab. I use Norton Internet Security, and had no problems prior to updating Firefox. How can I revert to the prior version of Firefox which worked well.

Norton products such as Confidential and Identity Safe are causing crashes for a large amount of users.

  • bug 783369 NEW --- Norton Confidential 2012/2013 crashes (couictlr.dll, coffplgn.dll)

To be sure, I'll need a crash report:

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

If you cannot get the crash report in Firefox:

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and select Run... on Windows XP or press Windows Key + R on Windows Vista/7.
  2. Type in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" including the quotation marks and click OK.

Mozilla and Norton are working feverishly to fix this issue as soon as possible. You may track their progress in the bug report above. At this time, the workaround is to disable the Identify Safe and related add-ons. The patch will arrive via Norton Live Update.

Tyler Downer , a Mozilla Employee, is collecting information about the crash from users and would like to talk with you.

The crashes are likely caused by Norton software like Norton Confidential or Norton Identity Safe because the crashes have coFFPlgn.dll or couictlr.dll in the crash signature ([@ coffplgn.dll@0x3714 ]) and the crash report (bug 783369).

Disable the Norton extensions and toolbars in Firefox to see if that helps.

I know this is frustrating, but the ball is in Norton's court. I'll post here when there is additional information to offer. Also, watch the bug report that cor-el and I posted above. Once again, the patch should arrive automatically via Live Update when it is released.

Why is this Norton's problem when it was caused by Firefox's upgrade??? An easier solution is to use a different browser. Norton works fine.

Because Mozilla washes their hands of their problems whenever they can possibly shift the blame. Always have, probably always will.
