Used and loved Thunderbird for over 3 years but started by being prompted for password which, although was correct, was never accepted. Cleared saved password, uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbird, changed password in gmail- did not work. IMAP is enabled in Gmail. Finally deleted Gmail account in Thunderbird and started from scratch. Now in Add Account I get the message Configuration found in Mozilla ISP dbase but when I click on Done I get error "Configuration could not be verified- is the username or password wrong?" The answer is no, it is the same. I'm out of things to try. Using Windows 7, downloaded Thunderbird from Google Chrome.

That doesn't work. Same error message and this is not a new device nor a new app. Plus, it works fine on my Macbook Air.

That doesn't work.

You'd certainly need to be more specific about what you did and what didn't work.

There are 3 options to the link you sent. None of them apply as I said. Underneath the options it says "Still having trouble logging in?" and provides a link to DisplayUnlockCaptcha- which I did. Still does not work and the error message is exactly the same.

I'm afraid you'll have to take the trouble and read the article.

Thank you so much for being snide, it really helps resolve this. There is no more article at the link you provided. It says only this:

Password incorrect” error

There are several reasons why you might see a “Password incorrect” error when signing in to Google using third-party apps like iPhone’s Mail app. In some cases even if you type your password correctly.

Here are the most common reasons you may see this error, and steps to take to access your account:

  • You’re signing in from a new location or device
  • Your device or app may not support Google’s security standards
  • 2-Step Verification is not supported by the app

Still having trouble signing in?

If you’ve tried all the options above but are still unable to sign in to your account on the app, try the following: 1.Go to https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha on your device's browser. 2.Enter your username and password, then type the letters on the screen. 3.Go back to the app and try signing in again.

I did everything listed above with no change in the problem.

Just to confirm, you have this set up (same account, Thunderbird, using IMAP) on a Macbook Air, and it's still working fine on that device, yes?

Cheers, Dave

Each of the help sections from the article you listed above can be expanded by clicking on them. Hint: start with the 'Your device or app may not support Google’s security standards' section.

Dave- yes, it still works on my Mac

christ- Got it. I did open them but did not see the text about desktop mail clients. So, then this is a change on Google's part this week? Because up until Tuesday it worked on my desktop just fine. Seems odd but if so, you're saying that Google no longer considers Mozilla Thunderbird secure on Windows desktops? If this is the case then there have got to be a lot more people like me who are SOL. And no options but to opt for less security. Not great.

Certainly you aren't the first one asking this question in this forum. The alternative to opt for 'less security' is to enable two-step authentication, which I think is a very good idea. Note, that you'll need to create an application specific password for Thunderbird if you turn that on.

Looked at 2-step but it is only available for Apple products, Blackberry, and other mobile devices.

Opting for less security but not a great solution and I may just have to opt out of Thunderbird until they can get this figured out with google. Thanks for your help.

That tells me you haven't understood what what 2-step authentication is and what is does.

Take the time and read the full article. https://support.google.com/accounts/topic/28786?hl=en&ref_topic=3382253

In any case, there is nothing wrong with Thunderbird's security, it is just how Google thinks authentication should be done to their Gmail service.

No, I probably don't but I went to the original link you sent and opened that article on 2-step verification band when I went to my account to do it, I got the pick list I mentioned above with no other options. It's not about the time or my ability to read, it's trying to get this fixed without it being a full-time job.

I really hope your superior attitude about all this has made you feel better about yourself, because it's demolished my interest in dealing with Thunderbird anymore. Fine, google is at fault but at this point they're not insulting me so I'll stick with them. You win. You're right. Feel better? Great customer service.

I bet you mac book does not have an anti virus program, would I be correct?
