can not reply or write emails with ver 38.3.0. Help!

Does it also fail if you have started THunderbird in safe mode? SEe https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Have a look in menu, Addons, Extensions (or Appearance). One of the items there is likely causing the prolem.
