a computer has died can I transfer my address book to a new computer from the hard drive?

I'd suggest you move the whole profile over.

Address books have the extension .mab if you really prefer to do it piecemeal.

Profiles and their contents are hidden by default, so you'll need to enable viewing of hidden files and folders.
