The headers on email messages are downloaded, but when I try clicking on "Download the rest of the message", nothing happens. Accordingly, I am unable to download the bulk of the message or its attachments. Thanks Daniel

It's a bug introduced in TB 52.1, so use TB 52.0.1 for now: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1361020

52.1.1 is up

more options

Problem continues in 52.2.1. (Windows 10, FWIW.)

more options

Just tested 52.2.1, works fine there.

more options

I'm sure it works fine on most machines, or it wouldn't have been released. But what characterizes yours, so I can look for differences from mine?

(Mine: Win10, Surface Pro 3, upgraded to each new release of TB within a few days of its release, and the problem started a few weeks ago.)

more options

As I said above, the bug was introduced in 52.1 and fixed at 52.1.1. It should be fixed in 52.2.1.

So what are the symptoms for you? You're downloading only headers or messages to a certain size? In both cases you get a "Download the rest of the message" link in the message which you click and it loads the entire message.

more options

Yes, it should be fixed in 52.2.1. But as I reported, it isn't (for me). I get the "Download the rest of message" link, but when I click on it, nothing happens. No download, no spinning circle or other "wait" symbol. I have waited for an hour or more to no avail. (Before a few weeks ago, a few seconds would be typical.)

FWIW, when my mouse hovers over that link, it shows what I expect (mailbox://<MyAccountName@domain>/Inbox?number= etc.). After I click, this address continues to display until I move the mouse. And I see the same if I return to the link later, to try again.

Yes, the link is correct, and when you click it, you should see "Loading message ..." in the status bar and then the full message loads, maybe unless it was already removed from the POP server.

What happens in "safe mode" with all add-ons switched off, see Help menu. And what happens on a new profile, run Thunderbird with the -p option to create a new profile.

Does it work in TB 52.0.1?

1. I do NOT see "Loading new message". Rather, the link address remains in the status bar (until I move the mouse away). 2. I have verified that messages do NOT disappear from the POP server. (This is the only way I have been able to see what these emails contain: Webmail works, though it is very clumsy for me.)

To answer a bit more: I do not recall when it began to fail. It was perhaps 4 weeks ago. Does that help to identify the relevant TB release?

more options

No it doesn't, we had a few releases in a short time span.

If you want to take this further, you need to answer my questions:

1) What happens in "safe mode" with all add-ons switched off, see Help menu. 2) And what happens on a new profile, run Thunderbird with the -p option to create a new profile. 3) Does it work in TB 52.0.1?

You can download previous versions from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/52.0.1/

more options

First item: No change in "safe mode".

As for a new profile, please clarify: Will this continue to give me access to the existing large emails that fail to download properly?

I will check on 52.0.1.

more options

A new profile would be for testing only.

I'm confused now: You download headers only or does the problem occur because you have a threshold and large message don't get downloaded entirely?

more options

52.0.1 was successful. (Good news!)

FWIW, Lightning version was not compatible. I did not downdate it, so it was left disabled.

more options

And you're 100% sure that 52.1.1 and 52.2.1 don't work? We know, 52.1.0 was broken.

more options

First few lines of large emails DO download. (Yes, threshold: 1 MB.) The remainder, including any large attachment (which is the only cause of large emails for me) does not. I did not describe my problem that way because this thread already described what appeared to be the same problem.

52.2.1 did NOT work (nor intermediate versions from 52.1.0 to 52.2.1). 52.0.1 DOES work.

Will creating a new profile still be helpful? If so, how to test it?

more options

There were two variations of "cannot download rest of message". In one case users only downloaded the headers, in the other case they had truncated messages due to a download threshold.

I've just tested the second variation (restricting messages to 20KB and sending a 40KB image) and it also works in TB 52.2.1. I even moved the message from the inbox to a local and then clicked the "download rest of message" link.

So where is the message located that contains the link? In the original inbox or in a local folder? Or where have you moved it?

Up above, you mentioned the link looks like: mailbox://<MyAccountName@domain>/Inbox?number= etc.

Can you sent me the exact link (right click, copy link location) in a private message? I also need to know where exactly the message is stored, so account and folder name. Maybe you use a global inbox shared with some other account?

Whether you believe me or not: The function generally works. We had a lot of complaints due to TB 52.1 but apart from yours, I haven't heard any more complaints after TB 52.1.1 where we fixed the issue. So your case must be special.

more options

Oh, now I get it: mailbox://<MyAccountName@domain>/Inbox?number= etc. wasn't something you substituted, you really got this from the link itself.

OK, I can reproduce your problem if I move the truncated message to an IMAP (!!) folder. Then the link is inactive and nothing happens when clicking onto it.

WRONG: I had the string on the clipboard and fooled myself, please ignore comment.

Wow! I don't even recall how to set up IMAP, nor do I recall making any Account or Option changes in ANYTHING in many months (or years). Is there an easy way to find some setting that's mis-set?

(BTW, I completely believe you that most people don't have this problem.)

more options

So if you haven't moved the message to an IMAP folder it's still in an unexpected location so the link doesn't work. The link isn't part of the message, it's generated on the fly when viewing the message.

If you need to take this further, you need to answer my questions from above:

1. Can you sent me the exact link (right click, copy link location) in a private message? Well, apparently it's: mailbox://<MyAccountName@domain>/Inbox?number= etc. No, it's not, this string comes from replacing private details in the original string. 2. I also need to know where exactly the message is stored, so account and folder name. Maybe you use a global inbox shared with some other account?
