Hi Patricia,
Are the missing items in the page area that changes as you browse, or in the toolbar area above the pages?
Page Area (Content Area)
Firefox has a new design for the New Tab page called the "Activity Stream". It has a Top Sites section, then Recommended by Pocket, then Highlights.
Do you have that page? If you have that page, you can switch bad to the old design to see whether your missing items are there. Here's how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false
You can open a new tab or reload (Ctrl+r) a current new tab page to see whether that gets back what you're looking for.
Does that help?
If you were using a completely different page on your new tabs before, most likely an add-on was replacing the page with either another web page or some locally stored data. However, that's a little harder to research.
I have the plain (?) default Firefox at the top there is a black space filled with tabs of my four favorite sites Ib tried to upload the thing I get - when I open a new tab oh it's ok really when you find out the use of the little round objects - is balls a rude word in this case ??? And I tried to send you a picture of the background I liked so much - dark with a river going to nowhere - gbut the pictures are sent with an unskilled hand and they were too large to send you What I am concerned for - which might be something to get used to is the little narrow bar which came in with the new tab page - there esd a list of all the everhelper pages and I could choose - well I have to go - because it is five past tuesday - thanks so much for your replies

Oh, Everhelper, I remember now, we discussed them in another thread.
The Everhelper website lists two products, both compatible with Firefox 57:
- Speed Dial (FVD) New Tab Page, 3D Start Page, Sync
- EverSync - Sync bookmarks, backup your favorites.
Could you check your list of disabled extensions and see if you can find your speed dialog there?
You can find the lists on the Add-ons page. Any of these will open it:
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
- type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return
In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then on the right side, scroll to the bottom where you find disabled extensions on a gray background. Anything speed dial related here that needs to be re-enabled?
If there's nothing relevant there, scroll back to the top and see if you have a link to "Show legacy extensions". That leads to a panel of extensions that cannot run in Firefox 57+. If Speed Dial is here, see whether you can trigger updates using the "gear" button above the list. That button gives a little menu, and one of the options is Check for Updates.
