How to recover Inbox after computer crash during Compact?

I am running Windows 10. Occasionally my computer freezes. Today Thunderbird asked to Compact and I agreed. While it was compacting the Inbox my computer froze. When that happens Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work and I have to restart. After the restart, all my emails in my Inbox (about 4000) appeared to be listed on the Inbox screen, but when I opened individual emails to check them they had no contents. All my other email sub-folders have their emails listed and the emails all have their correct contents.

I used the Repair option for the Inbox folder. The number of unread emails went down from about 4000 to about 1700. All the emails in the Inbox now have contents, but the latest email is for December 8th 2016 and nothing after that date.

Is it possible to recover the missing emails in my Inbox and how should I go about it?

Appreciate any help.

You'd need to restore them from a backup created prior to the incident.

Accumulating messages in Inbox is a bad idea. Inbox is most susceptible to corruption. So keep your Inbox as tidy as possible.

Corruption is often caused by anti-virus software messing with Thunderbird mail files. It is therefore recommended to create an exception for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the real-time scanner won't attempt to scan the profile with your mail.

And make sure to create backups of your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
