When I first bring up Thunderbird to read my new emails and highlight an e-mail that I want to delete, I have to go to the bottom of the screen and bring up the "reply/forward/archive/junk/delete/more" screen.

Does the message pane open if you press F8?

Once open it it should stay that way. Thunderbird opens just like you closed it unless you have a file cleaner like CCleaner erasing your prefs file.

I am not sure what you are having an issue with.

There are several ways to delete a message. There is a delete button on the header of the Messages Pane which is what you seem to be describing. Does that button not work?

You can right click a message and select Delete.

You can press the Delete key on your keyboard.

You can add a Delete button to the Mail Toolbar by right clicking the toolbar and selecting Customize. Find the Delete button in the dialog box that opens and drag and drop on the toolbar.

The delete button on the header of the message pane does work but I have to go down to the bottom screen and line up the arrow with the bottom line and raise it up to see the message pane.

 Thanks
